We started this September our homeschool Preschool with Damian (23 months old). I am having a blast. I have found most of the resources I needed for the lessons I am giving him except for Finance and money management lessons. It is very important to us that we raise children to be ready for the real life so Finance HAS to be part of his education since toddlerhood.
So we are developing our own way from friends advice etc. Of course, we are starting with the simplest form of it because typically two year olds have not developed yet the part of the brain that helps understand abstract concepts but we're starting with the concrete ones.
We are giving Damian an allowance of 10 cents a week per year old. That is, 20 cents a week for a two year old. We put this money in his piggy bank at the end of every week and explain when he has enough of these coins he could purchase his favorite fruits, a toy, or even a big bike. At the end of every month we help him add how much he has saved and what he could buy with that but also what he could buy instead if he waited another month. Just to help develop some Delayed Gratification. He has learned that concept through choices such as watch one short episode of Daniel Tiger in the morning or a long movie (hr long) before dinner. Today for example he is waiting til after his nap to watch a movie called Peppa Pig.
As Damian grows older we will give him the chance to sign up to get loans from us. For example, when he is 6-8 he might want a a tub of Legos. If he has not saved enough he can get a loan from us, WITH interest. If he doesn't pay his interest or pay back the loan the consequence would be much like in real life, impounding something that is about the price of said loan.
This is what we have developed so far and we are still getting suggestions and thinking through it. We are open to suggestions, in fact we ask you to give us your input if you have one =)
